Community Art Celebration at Inova LNRC

This spring Art Together partnered with Inova Loudoun Nursing & Rehabilitation Center to apply for a grant from the Dementia Society of America to help underwrite art enrichment programming for its nursing home residents. We were awarded a $1,000 grant which was a dream come true for us as we strive to find ways to fund our creative enrichment programs for our local seniors who are so eager to paint.

In celebration and with abundant gratitude, our summer art program culminated with a Summer in the Arts Exhibit, Demo and Artist Reception on Sept. 20, 2019. We also honored a few special guests who have made our joy possible with their support: Mabel Costello, Director of Activities, Connie Gier and Sharon Connor for underwriting one art scholarship monthly for two years, and Alicia Holz for her time and loving dedication as a monthly volunteer painting companion. A special thank you to Jerry’s Flowers and Gifts of Leesburg for donating bouquets of flowers as gifts for our resident artists and honorees. We had such a wonderful time together celebrating the gift of the arts in our lives, and can’t wait til we get to do it again!

Staff Have Fun Learning How to Paint While Learning Valuable Insights about Caregiving

” I learned to put trust in another person when I could hardly trust myself.” Caregiver and workshop participant

Nineteen staff members of a senior living community gathered for an art workshop unlike any they ever expected. Some were already nervous about painting for the first time. But before they could even put their first brushstroke on their canvas, they learned that any expectations they had of learning how to paint were going to involve a lot more than listening to and watching the instructor!

With their eyes closed and relying on their other senses, they worked collaboratively with their peers to complete their beach paintings. This was just one of the many challenges that they had to overcome that gave them a deeper insight and empathy for those they care for who have mobility and sight impairments.

After completing a collaborative diptych (a painting composed of two panels), participants were asked what they appreciated or learned. Many people shared that they learned how to trust others, value teamwork, and appreciated getting to know other members of the staff in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. One person shared: “I learned that painting is a beautiful thing; it shows how beautiful the world can be when you share it with people you love.”

Daughters Open Doors to Creativity for Others

Since the summer of 2017, the daughters of one of our former clients have been sponsoring other nursing home residents to participate in our creative aging programs through a scholarship in their mom’s honor and memory. We are so very grateful, as are the many seniors who’ve painted because of their generosity!

“Our mother, Marion McAboy, had the rewarding experience of painting for the first time due to the generous gift of a late patient and his family. The fact that Mom had dementia and a stroke did not stand in her way of enjoying this creative activity.

After seeing how much our mother enjoyed her experience, we wanted it to continue. It proved to us to be a beneficial and needed therapeutic experience for both patient and family.  Mom used to tell us as kids that embracing the unknown of new experiences can be challenging but exciting, like an adventure.

Thus, in memory of our Mom, it is our honor and privilege to establish ‘Marion’s Adventures.’ This is a monthly gift for other patients to enjoy an opportunity to enjoy a fun and rewarding creative experience and thereby allowing them as well as us to share in Mom’s fulfilling adventure.”

Over $2,000 in art scholarships awarded in 2018!

Recognizing that many of our seniors have very limited financial resources, we offer scholarships through our Benevolent Fund for those who need a little help to be able to participate in our private-pay programs. We fund these scholarships for seniors in our community by donating a portion of our profits, as well as partnering with our client families and members of our community who help us with donations through memorial gifts and sponsorships.

In gratitude for the blessings we have received from some of our anonymous client families in 2018 who have generously provided these opportunities for others, we offer a huge and color-filled thank you!

Just a few of our happy recipients!

Meadow Glen’s Open House Celebrates Their Resident Artists

On June 1st we had the great joy of showcasing the beautiful artists we get to work with at Meadow Glen Assisted Living. Residents and visitors enjoyed our slideshow and exhibit featuring a sampling of the hundreds of paintings Meadow Glen’s residents have created in the nearly four years they’ve had me coming there. As a special added treat, attendees were given an opportunity to experience for themselves just how easy and enjoyable it is to follow our guided painting process! Two beautiful collaborative beach paintings were created that night by eight brave residents, families, staff and visitors!

Presenting at the Maryland Activity Coordinators Society’s Annual Conference in Ocean City, MD

On September 27 & 28 2016, I had the privilege to present two 90-minute workshops at the Maryland Activity Coordinator’s Society (MACS) annual conference in Ocean City, MD. It was a wonderful experience! I am so grateful that my associate, Jess Sauder, was able to join me. I was also deeply honored that Greenfield Senior Living of Berryville, Virginia would send their Activities Director four hours away for two days to give a five-minute testimonial at each workshop about how much they value my program. It was a wonderful experience for each of us to be with such a caring and talented group of activity professionals. I’d like to also give a special thank you to Tammy Hay, MACS Conference Coordinator and Activities Director at Carol Lutheran Village in Maryland, for inviting me to speak and lead these hands-on workshops. May all these efforts help more people to experience the life-enriching gifts of the arts in their lives.

Our clients’ art helps support mission of Alzheimer’s Association

Greenfield Senior Living of Berryville, VA in partnership with Art Together recently hosted a silent art auction with all proceeds to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

The artwork was created by the residents who have participated in our programs over the past two years. Thanks to the generous donations of more than 25 paintings by residents and their families, and the generous donations by attendees, the event was able to raise $930 in just 90 minutes! Wow!!

Here’s to the gift of the arts in our lives….and the blessings and healing they can bring to others!
